Who Will Love a Little Sparrow

I thought of Simon and Garfunkel's song about the little sparrow today.  I was reading about wind energy.  Wind energy farms kill birds.  Perhaps not enough birds to change the course of development.  But enough to make me think about the song.  Here are the words.

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who’s traveled far and cries for rest?
"Not I," said the Oak Tree
"I won’t share my branches with no sparrow’s nest
And my blanket of leaves won’t warm her cold breast"

Who will love a little Sparrow
And who will speak a kindly word?
"Not I," said the Swan
"The entire idea is utterly absurd
I’d be laughed at and scorned if the other Swans heard"

And who will take pity in his heart,
And who will feed a starving Sparrow?
"Not I," said the Golden Wheat
"I would if I could, but I cannot, I know
I need all my grain to prosper and grow"

Who will love a little Sparrow?
Will no one write her eulogy?
"I will," said the Earth
"For all I’ve created returns unto me
From dust were ye made and dust ye shall be"

If you are not familiar, here is the song.

  1. Why is the Oak so maligned in verse? I read the first line of the stanza above, and it reminded me of the song "The Trees" by Rush:

There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

    The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

There is trouble in the forest,
And the creatures all have fled,
    As the maples scream "Oppression!"
And the oaks just shake their heads

So the maples formed a union
    And demanded equal rights.
    "The oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
    By hatchet, axe, and saw.
